Party Chairman visits Chesham & Amersham

At a packed meeting of Chesham and Amersham Conservative Association the following motion was passed unanimously last evening. It calls upon  the Government to reconsider the decision to proceed with HS2 as a matter of urgency, pledges the Association to continue supporting the fight against HS2 and provides support to Bucks County and Chiltern District Councils as they commence Judicial Review proceedings against the Government.

"Chesham and Amersham Conservative Association continues to believe that there are no economic or environmental benefits that flow from HS2.  We urge the Secretary of State for Transport to reconsider her decision to proceed with HS2 as a matter of urgency and in doing so suggest that she pays due regard to the findings of the recent Transport Select Committee Report and to the overwhelming weight of public opinion as expressed in the HS2 Consultation and in the recent YouGov poll that showed 74% of the population to be against HS2.

We pledge ourselves to continue the fight against HS2 and to continue to highlight the alternatives (upgrades to existing rail infrastructure, investment in the digital economy) that will bring benefits across the country rather than the few.
This Association is united in its support for Bucks Country Council, Chiltern District Council and the other members of 51M as they consider grounds for a  judicial review of the Secretary of State for Transports decision. We believe that such a judicial review would be a wholly justifiable and proper use of public funds as the defence of our nations scare financial resources and our AONB is a priority for us all at this time."

Andrew Garnett Chairman of Chesham and Amersham commented
"HS2 is the biggest threat this constituency has faced in living memory. We are committed to doing all we can to fight it off from within our Party. To this end last Wednesday evening we hosted Lord Feldman (Co Chairman of the Party) to ensure that he fully understands the anger, disappointment and hurt this decision has caused and precisely why people living both on and off the line in our nation cannot support it. HS2 is the wrong investment decision for UK plc at a time of national austerity. It is the wrong decision to address capacity issues on the West Coat Mainline. It is the wrong decision to bring about a shift from planes to more sustainable forms of transport. We will continue to make the case against this misguided policy whenever and wherever we can"
