Angela Eagle (Shadow Secretary of State for Transport) announced yesterday that the Labour Party's preferred HS2 route would now take in Heathrow and run alongside the M40.
Reacting to this news Andrew Garnett Chairman of Chesham and Amersham Conservative Association said:
"Running a major infrastructure project along an existing major transport corridor is clearly a sensible option. It's noteworthy that Ove Arup initially favoured this route which was then rejected by the last Labour Government.
No route change can however address the fact that economic case for HS2 is non existent and the environmental damage it will wreak will be too great wherever it is located. Chesham and Amersham Conservative Association remain of the view that HS2 should not be in anyone's backyard. It's time for the national politicians to wake up to this fact and stop wasting our money on an unnecessary vanity project"
