Delivering Brexit. Funding our public services. Uniting our country. Whoever becomes the next Prime Minister, they will face a number of important tasks. Building HS2 is not one of them.
Although HS2 is years away from completion, the impact of the project on our community is already being felt.
The HS2 ‘enabling works’ have caused environmental harm not just in parts of the Chilterns but across 500 acres of Buckinghamshire. Wildlife-sustaining hedgerows, irreplaceable trees and ancient woodland have already been removed in preparation for the Government issuing HS2’s Notice to Proceed.
With the cost now estimated at £100 billion, it is time to stop throwing good money after bad.
Government ministers are now starting to have second thoughts. Liz Truss, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, recently proposed looking again at whether HS2 delivers value for money when compared to other transport schemes. HS2’s costs will be scrutinised closely in the upcoming government spending review.
We call on the next Prime Minister to put the HS2 project out of its misery and cancel it for good.
