 Chesham & Amersham Conservative Association
THE BLUES’ NEWS - SOCIAL & POLITICAL EVENTS -- Issue date: June 2010
It feels as if the General Election took place ages ago.In reality, it can’t be that long because, as we go to press,we still await the delivery of George Osborne’s‘within-50-days’ Budget.
After all the hard work that went into campaigning, mainly in marginal seats where help was much needed and greatly appreciated,(and, vitally, helped gain several valuable seats) Branches and Organisations are turning their thoughts once more to matters closer to home.
So, if you have itchy feet and want to get back into the Conservative Party social whirl, not to mention members’ pretty gardens and welcoming homes, this is the pamphlet for you. Listed below you will find details of all the events arranged so far for the summer and beyond.
A warm reception awaits you at any you care to attend. Among the guests at many of these events will be the Rt Hon Cheryl Gillan, MP, Secretary of State for Wales. Congratulations, Cheryl, on your Cabinet post!
Following the General Election, readers in Great Missenden and Prestwood are now ‘fully fledged’ members of the constituency. Also, and not surprisingly, the Association signed up many new members in the run up to the election. A special welcome to you all... If any of you would like to become involved in events in your area and you’re not sure where to begin, why not call the office in Beaconsfield on 01494 673745. You will speak to Philip (our Agent), Liz or Kay, who will be happy to offer guidance and put you in touch with the right person.
JUNE

After supper, Cheryl will voice her thoughts on the aftermath of the General Election before answering questions from Club members. (No doubt the threat posed by the route of the High Speed Train will get an airing too.)
To find out more about membership of the Club or to reserve a place, please call the Membership Secretary, Margaret Hedger, on 01494 786879.
23rd Executive Council meets in the Chiltern Room, Chalfont St Peter Community Centre at 8 p.m. It’s the first meeting since the General Election. It should be busy...

JULY

Having been held at various venues ‘on the Hill’ for the past few occasions, this annual event moves to the historic Hinton House for 2010. Tickets, which include a glass of wine, are £15 for adults or £5 for children under 14. They are available from Jean Wesson (01494 726365) or you can email Martin Phillips at martillips@aol.com. 9th Supper Club at Amersham & Chiltern Rugby Club, Ash Grove, off Weedon Lane, off Copperkins Lane, Amersham HP6 5QU at 7.30 for 8 p.m. July sees the appearance of Programme Secretary David Smith’s ‘Peer of the Year’, the Rt Hon Lord Hunt of Wirral, MBE.
Entering Parliament at a by-election in 1976, David Hunt spent 21 years as an MP. In 1979 he became a member of Margaret Thatcher’s first administration and served in many different roles throughout her premiership. In 1990 he was appointed Secretary of State for Wales, a position that he retained in John Major’s government. Made a Life Peer in 1997, Lord Hunt produced his Report on the Financial Ombudsman Service in 2008 and, in the same year, was asked by David Cameron to go formally on to the front bench to shadow Peter Mandelson on Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform.
Non-Club members who would like to attend should contact Margaret Hedger on 01494 786879 to reserve a seat. The cost is £16. (Cheques payable to ‘Conservative Supper Club’ please.) Members usually bring their own wine, although it is likely that the Rugby Club’s bar will be open until 8 p.m. and they will be happy to accommodate you.
10th The Lee & Cholesbury Branch Summer Lunch at The Old Cottage, The Lee, HP16 9LZ, from 12 Noon – 3 p.m. by kind invitation of the Branch Chairman, Robin Allison. If you fancy a leisurely Saturday lunchtime relaxing in a pretty garden in the shade of an ancient tree or looking out across fields of corn (or is barley or rye?) with the good old Scouts’ marquee close to hand to provide a home for the food and drink, this is the place for you. With our MP and Leaders of both County and District Councils present, there could be plenty of politics on the menu too.
For tickets costing £12.50, including food and wine, please contact Robin on 01494 837338. Bookings close on 30th June and numbers are limited, so pick up that phone!
17th Chesham Bois Branch Summer Barbeque at 11 Long Park, HP6 6PN from 12 noon – 3 p.m. by kind invitation of Mr & Mrs David Kirchheimer. Yes, here’s another opportunity for you to enjoy the great outdoors. See the hens scratching away at the end of the garden and listen to the sound of the sausages sizzling and bees buzzing. How much more pleasant than sitting indoors in front of the telly watching the World Cup to the accompanying drone of vuvuzelas!
Tickets cost £14 including a glass of wine; children aged 12 and under get in for £5 and there will be games to keep them and their parents occupied if they so wish. Please contact the Branch Chairman, Jill Harris on 01494 433025 or email her at jillharris50@btinternet.com. Cheques should be made payable to ‘Chesham Bois Conservatives’.
23rd Conservative Women’s Organisation Summer Lunch at Amersham & Chiltern Rugby Club, Ash Grove, Weedon Lane, off Copperkins Lane, Amersham HP6 5QU at 12 noon for 12.30 p.m. The speakers are the Rt Hon Cheryl Gillan MP and the Rt Hon Sir Jeremy Hanley KCMG. Politics may be a serious business, but Sir Jeremy usually has some highly amusing anecdotes to share with his audience.
There’s no need for you men to feel excluded; all members of the Association are invited to attend. CWO Chairman, Jean Priestly, is in charge of the tickets. They cost £16. Soft drinks are included in the price, but if you prefer wine, please bring your own. (Glasses are provided.) Please contact Jean on 01494 873521. 24th St Mary’s Branch Lunchtime Drinks & Nibbles from noon to 2 p.m. at 30 Pednormead End, off Church Street, Chesham, HP5 2JS by kind invitation of Mrs Wendy Powter.
It’s sangria time again! It has proved so popular that we keep serving it... Red and white wine and soft drinks are available too, but it’s the sangria that steals the show, especially on a warm, sunny day. A generous assortment of nibbles is provided to accompany the tipple of your choice, so there will be no need to start cooking when you get back home. Sit in the garden and relax. Listen carefully and you will hear the babble of the River Chess as it wends its way towards the Queen’s Head and beyond.
Tickets cost £9 and are available from Wendy Powter (01494
773557), June Wilson (783821) or Liz Pooley (772172). Any cheques should be made payable to ‘C&ACA’, please.
